The Next Step
I learned from the campaign that the appeal of the new social function — to connect the positive — is almost irresistible. It was literally a political paranormal experience to have my name placed in nomination. It happened because the idea is obvious and intuitively almost all people want it to happen.
Secondly, I realized that in this campaign there were seeds of a new approach to politics that could work. Mine was a symbolic idea campaign; I am not a politician. I do not have organizing skills. I am a communicator of ideas and a stimulator of vision. From the campaign’s modest, yet remarkable, success, however, I saw how a real team might succeed in transforming American politics, opening it up to a more participatory and creative democracy.
A presidential and vice-presidential team should form and select ahead of time members of a cabinet who know well the social innovations in their fields. The team would work together, discover, and link up with what is now working to create a positive future. After they have identified key innovations in each field, they would spend the needed time developing a platform based on the further development of what works. It is a design for a positive future. The presidential candidate would introduce the team the American people will actually be electing if they elect the candidate president. Each team member would speak briefly about what he or she knows really works for solving a problem. The team would then introduce major social innovators who briefly discuss the success of their projects. The vice-presidential candidate would promise to establish the Office for the Future in the White House.
The presidential team would invite people to tell them more of what works in each region of the country and ask them to form local centers to continue to scan for, map, connect, and communicate breakthroughs in their communities. These campaign events would attract local media and elected officials. Efforts would be made to connect people and projects and to continually facilitate cocreation among people. The presidential team would become a magnet for the positive. Using the internet, the team could not only connect and communicate the positive in this country, but could join with teams in other countries who choose to do the same for their societies. We would quickly cultivate a new movement for positive change rising throughout the world.
I believe that such a campaign would have a beneficent effect on the political process and would inspire candidates from all parties and at all levels of government to run on the people’s innovation and creativity.
My sense is that the timing is right to take the next step in the manifestation of this vision. The Cold War, in its most deadly form, is over. The insane threat of nuclear winter has receded. Yet the crises afflicting our system, especially the environment, are escalating. Paradoxically, at the same time, the materialistic or pessimistic worldview is transforming as the number of cultural cocreatives rises. However, there is currently no comprehensive hopeful meme to guide our actions toward a positive future.
